Frequently Asked Questions
Is attendance mandatory?
As a general rule, attendance at lectures, exercises, or tutorials is not checked. This is your own responsibility. In some lectures, however, participation in exercises is mandatory, for example, if a project is part of the final exam, as is the case in some seminars. Your instructor will inform you of this during the first lecture.
What is the difference between exercises and tutorials?
Exercises are usually led by the professor, a graduate student, or someone in a similar position, and are intended to supplement the lecture and provide an opportunity to ask questions. Typically, the instructor stands at the front of the room and reviews the material from the lecture or works through practice problems.
Tutorials are usually led by students in higher semesters or by students who have already completed the course in a previous semester. In these sessions, students typically work on assignments on their own, which are then reviewed and compared.
Both formats may vary from course to course, the professor will provide specific details during the first lecture.
Is it necessary to register for the exercises and tutorials?
In the Department of Business Informatics and Mathematics, you are only required to register for the exercises and tutorials if there are assignments for them. In most cases, it is not even possible to register for the exercises at the beginning of the semester. The professor will explain the regulations for each course during the first lecture.
However, attendance at the exercises and tutorials is strongly recommended in all cases in order to understand the lecture material and apply it.
In courses where there are several practice groups with different instructors, does it matter which group I choose, or are they all equivalent?
Some of these exercises or tutorials have assignments, which is why you must be registered in the system and assigned to a group. You can often specify which of the parallel groups suits you best. In some cases, this is merely a formal step so that you are officially part of a group, but you can switch to another one at any time if it suits you better.
How do I know if there are assignments in my course?
You’ll find out during the first lecture whether the course includes assignments or short quizzes throughout the semester. You’ll also be told whether the assignments are to be completed in groups or with a partner, and if so, whether you can choose your own partners or will be assigned to them. You’ll also receive all the information about the deadlines during that lecture.
How can I deregister from a course?
As long as you haven't been assigned to a group for assignments or anything similar, you should be able to drop the course the same way you enrolled in it. If assignment groups have already been created for the course (you'd know if that were the case), please let your professor know, otherwise, it's not necessary.
My lecture/
excercise/tutorial isn't showing up on my schedule. How can I fix this? If you haven't yet registered for the course/
excercise/tutorial that isn't showing up, please do so. Then refresh the webpage. If you are already registered but the course/
excercise/tutorial still isn’t showing up, go to “Studying” → “Search for Courses” on Portal2 and select your desired course, then click on the title. This will take you to a new page, there, click the “add to schedule” button.
