Business Process Management (BPM) is the art and science of analyzing how work is performed in organizations, with the aim to ensure consistent outcomes and to take advantage of improvement opportunities. The focal point of any BPM initiative is formed by one or more business processes, which are sets of related activities that transform some input into an output that is valuable to a customer. Such processes exist in every organization, from hospitals to financial institutions, and from family businesses to global enterprises.

Within this context, Han van der Aa’s research particularly focuses on the development of automated methods for process analysis. These methods include tailored artificial intelligence techniques, primarily employing machine learning and natural language processing in order to answer questions such as: Is a process executed in the way that it should be? Where are its bottlenecks? And, how can we support workers involved in the process’ execution? Han van der Aa specifically targets two angles that are key to answering such questions in real-world settings: (1) dealing with uncertainty caused by, for instance, data quality issues, and (2) considering the semantic aspect in process analysis, i.e., enabling automated techniques to understand the meaning of the process subject to analysis.
